Carpet Recycling UK is leading on the development of an industry wide plan to tackle the 350,000 tonnes of broadloom carpet waste generated annually...
The Carpet Material Action plan is backed by WRAP and DEFRA and will form a vital part of the National Resource Efficiency Plan for the Flooring Industry.
Carpet Recycling UK has brought together a stakeholder group to guide the development of the Action Plan, which will seek to overcome the barriers currently inhibiting the recycling of broadloom carpet. The group features representatives from across the carpet supply chain including retailers, distributors, flooring contractors and recyclers and is supported by key industry players including Carpetright and Headlam Group.
Carpet Recycling UK has also secured the support of LARAC, the umbrella group for local authority recycling teams, to ensure that proposals are fully endorsed by public as well as private sector stakeholders.
The stakeholder group will focus on setting targets to improve resource efficiency and developing action plans to meet them. The first meeting of the group took place in October, with a two further meetings scheduled before the launch of the Action Plan in March 2010.
Once implemented, the Action Plan stands to have a huge impact on recycling rates in the flooring industry.
