Carpet recycling news

Energy recovery from carpets achieved by MID UK Recycling (January 2010)

Mid UK Recycling in Caythorpe, Lincolnshire, have a 15 acre, 200000 tonnes per annum, fully licensed materials recycling facility with state of the art equipment installed...

They have recently developed technology and handling capabilities for bulky and difficult wastes in order to recover energy from the materials and for reuse.

Carpets and carpet tiles fall into the category of difficult wastes to size reduce efficiently to meet the needs of alternative fuel users. However they do have the advantage of good CV (calorific value) due to the high synthetic polymer content of carpets which can be of value to boost the CV of mixed waste streams.

Following extensive testing, a system has been devised to handle all types of carpets and even the most difficult bitumen backed carpet tiles. Palletised loads of used carpet tiles including fitting wastes can now be accepted by Mid-UK Recycling from the construction or production wastes sector, helping the industry to meet its new ambitious target of halving construction wastes to landfill by 2012.

Domestic carpets and underlay segregated out at civic amenity sites and kept dry can also be accepted for this energy recovery process.
