Sellers Engineers introduce Fibrebak pile removal machine (January 2010)

Sellers Engineers of Huddersfield, who are world leaders in the design and manufacture of carpet finishing machinery, have introduced a new machine capable of pile removal from carpets so that the valuable pile fibres can be recovered and recycled...

This machine can cleanly remove the pile with low levels of contamination. Resultant fibres can then be recovered into engineering resins for plastic moulding where there is a demand for pure polypropylene or nylon streams. The remaining backing carcass can be size reduced and recycled whether it is bitumen based or polypropylene based.

The challenge with recycling of carpets is to recover the highest value materials with the lowest levels of contamination from other materials in the composite, and this technology is a step in the right direction.
