Greenback carpet shred now virtually dust free (January 2010)

Following a recent major investment programme Greenback Recycling Ltd in Melksham, a Founder Member of Carpet Recycling UK, have installed technology to reduce fines...

Their 25mm shred in both mixed synthetics and wool rich has been significantly improved and is now almost dust free.

Carpet shred always contains fine particles of chalk filled latex which is used as the binder to attach the layers of pile and backing. Normal production techniques for shredding can take out most of the dirt which is present from years of foot traffic but it is often difficult to remove the heavier latex particles.

Using separation techniques from other industries for the first time on carpets has resulted in a much improved product. Obviously it is not possible with this type of technology to remove particles stuck to pile fibres as the latex has to perform an efficient locking of pile fibres into the backing.

This resultant improved shred will open up new opportunities in equestrian arenas where synthetic carpet shred has now become established as the premium surface modifier for all weather use combined with optimum ride quality and animal comfort. Other end-uses as diverse as plastic moulding, fibre reprocessing, insulation, and agricultural use particularly for wool rich shred, will also all benefit from these more fibrous and lower contaminant materials.

A key output is also a fine material suitable as a potential replacement filler in new latex applications so that the cradle to cradle goal for carpets can be further enhanced.
