Carpet Recycling UK has secured public funding for research and development to open up new possibilities for recycling polypropylene carpets...
The project, funded by public body Envirolink Northwest, will test recovery of polypropylene from carpet waste into pellet form for reuse in other products, with the aim of creating new end use markets for post-consumer polypropylene carpet.
Trials are being undertaken by Axion Polymers, who were commissioned on the basis of their proven track record in developing innovative processing solutions for recycling plastics from post consumer waste such as WEEE waste.
Envirolink Northwest approved the application in October and work has already begun on the project, which is due to finish by the end of the year with results available early 2010.
Dave Taylor from Envirolink Northwest said "We are pleased to be funding trials to help divert post-consumer waste carpets from landfill. In doing this Envirolink is actively supporting the Government's directives to reduce landfill whilst building a low carbon economy in the region. A successful outcome will have both environmental and economic benefits, as a growth in the region's recycling sector will help create and safeguard jobs."
