  • Expand the variety of collection channels and take-back logistics
HISTORY

Carpet Recycling UK was formed in November 2007 by three individuals with first-hand experience of the challenges and opportunities of carpet recycling.

They agreed that an industry-wide initiative was required to pool existing knowledge, commission supplementary research, and find large-scale solutions.

Kate ChappellKate Chappell Kate graduated from Oxford University with a degree in Economics and then completed a Masters Degree in Sustainable Development at Middlesex University in London in 2002.

In 2003, Kate set up Spruce Carpets Ltd, a residential carpet take-back and refurbishment scheme to benefit low-income households in Scotland. A year later, Kate established a sister company for contact carpet refurbishment and became partners with InterfaceFLOR and Milliken Carpet to process take-back material. In 2006, Kate moved on to develop higher volume recycling programmes and founded Greenback Recycling Ltd to offer a municipal carpet recycling scheme to local authorities in the South West of England. Kate completed a trade sale of the business to an existing recycling operation, and Greenback Recycling continues to be a leader in carpet recycling in the UK.

In co-founding Carpet Recycling UK in 2008, Kate aims to draw the recycling and carpet industries together to build solutions for recycling 100% post-consumer carpets. She brings hands-on experience of establishing carpet recycling schemes and an entrepreneurial mindset to the association.

Kate has won several awards for enterprise; most recently she was recognised as one of the 'Future 100 Young Entrepreneurs' as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2008. Spruce Carpets was also recently voted 'Social Enterprise of the Year' by Scottish Business in the Community.
